Communication and boundaries for direct support professionals

August 5, 2026 · 2 min

A direct support professional spends the shift in someone else's home, routine, and relationships. The work depends on how they talk and on what they refuse to decide. Communication and boundaries are the topics supervisors ask about before a new hire is far into orientation, and again when a refresher is due.

Communication is more than a pleasant tone

DSPs need language for three audiences: the person they support, that person's family, and the coworkers who take the next shift. A clear handoff note is a communication skill. So is asking what the person wants before starting a routine, and saying when you do not know the answer.

Training that only coaches tone misses the job. The useful version ties each skill to a moment on the shift: arriving, offering a choice, calling a supervisor, and writing down what changed.

Boundaries protect the person and the DSP

Boundaries are the limits on gifts, personal contact, money, and decisions that belong to someone else. A new hire should hear those limits from the agency, not invent them after a hard shift. Families sometimes ask a DSP to do something that sits outside the role. The lesson is how to pause and bring that request back to a supervisor.

Use it in orientation and again later

New hires need the rules before they have a favorite shortcut. Current DSPs need the same topics when the shortcut has become the routine. A refresher is the right place to return to boundaries without repeating every orientation module.

None of this states a Maine requirement or a mandated hour count. It is the conversation hiring agencies already have. A walkthrough can match these topics to the roles you employ and show where they sit in the course catalog.
