DSP role training and I/DD program training

May 7, 2026 · 2 min

Agencies ask two different questions and often type them into the same search box. One question is about the direct support professional: what should a new hire finish, and what should current DSPs practice again? The other is about an intellectual and developmental disability program: how the program is designed, staffed, and documented.

Maine DSP is the front door for the first question. Maine IDD is the front door for the second. Keeping them apart stops both sites from chasing the same search and stops a supervisor from starting in the wrong catalog.

Use Maine DSP when the subject is the role

You are in the right place if you employ direct support professionals in Maine and you want orientation or refresher training for that job. The conversation is about dignity, daily support, communication, boundaries, and a record of who finished. It is not a job board, and it does not enroll a DSP by itself.

Use Maine IDD when the subject is the program

You want the sister site if the meeting is about the provider program that supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. That work can include DSP staff, but the question is the program, not a single role's orientation. Sending people to the wrong site wastes the walkthrough.

What neither site will tell you

Neither site states what Maine DHHS requires, and neither one claims a course is state-approved. Approval notes that Your Training Provider publishes live on the parent site. Training copy here is general information for a hiring agency, not legal advice and not a substitute for your policies.

If you are still unsure which door to use, describe the team in the form. Say whether you are training DSPs for the role they were hired into, or asking about the program those DSPs work inside. The follow-up can point you at the catalog that matches.
